We hear this a lot. And the answer is almost always the same: cotton poplin.
What is cotton poplin?
Poplin is a plain weave fabric with a fine, ribbed texture. It's lightweight but structured — meaning it holds a silhouette beautifully without feeling stiff or heavy. It breathes well, which matters enormously in Indian weather, and it has a subtle sheen that reads as premium without being shiny.
It's the kind of fabric that photographs well, feels comfortable against the skin, and holds up wash after wash without losing its body.
Why most brands don't use it
Quality cotton poplin costs more than standard cotton. For brands competing on price, it's an easy cut. The difference isn't always obvious in a photo — but it's immediately obvious when you wear it.

The honest truth about fast fashion fabric
Most mass-market dresses are made in 80–100 GSM cotton or polyester blends. They photograph fine. They feel thin in person. After three washes, they've lost their shape entirely.
